Waechter Architecture is an emerging architecture practice based in Portland, Oregon. Housed in our recently completed all-wood CLT building, the studio produces a diverse portfolio of work including multi-family housing, single-family residences, hospitality, retail, art and increasingly public programs. . After spending years developing a clear and repeatable approach to design, Waechter Architecture is ready to begin a new phase of studio work and culture.

We are looking for a Business Development Manager to begin an integral and scalable process of elevating our studio into this new phase of work. The ideal candidate will bring discipline-specific experience of architecture with forward-looking insight to develop new projects, clients and markets. This will require a balance between short-term attention and long-term vision.

The Business Development Manager will work closely with our studio founder, Ben Waechter and the studio design manager. Ideal experience would include 5+ years of work in marketing, communications or business development in the architectural field. This candidate’s primary role will focus on business development, with a secondary role on general PR, marketing, and studio storytelling projects. Day-to-day activities include working on RFP and RFQ proposals and potential project pitches, press, publications and events management, website updates and social media strategy. The candidate must be passionate about architecture and its related disciplines, possess excellent organizational, writing and graphic skills. Most importantly, they must be both self-directed while genuinely enjoying working within an intimate and collaborative team.

Business development tasks

  • Develop long-term vision, branding and awareness strategy with studio founder and design director

  • Proactively reach out to potential clients in a wide range of markets to build relationships between them and our Design Principal/Director

  • Build and maintain a robust opportunity pipeline

  • Identify and organize the design team in the development of RFQs/RFPs, custom packages and client presentation documents

  • Develop new business and marketing content including resumes, project materials, databases and profiles

  • Act as an active representative of the company in meetings, events and opportunities with customers. Candidates will have a professional demeanor and be very confident in a customer facing support role.

Public relations tasks

  • Coordinate internal and external media opportunities, including online and print awards, magazine and news submissions

  • Update and maintain the content of the website; coordinate the development and launch of the next website redevelopment

  • Identify and coordinate with PR, marketing, photography and graphic design consultants as needed

  • Manage social media and other content creation, ensuring frequency, tone and voice are aligned with overall business strategy

  • Oversee photo shoots for completed projects; respect a defined budget, negotiate contracts with photographers, coordinate logistics, manage post-production

  • Organize and supervise public events

Experience required:

  • Bachelor’s or bachelor’s degree required

  • Degree in architecture preferred

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in marketing/communications in the field of architecture

  • Able to work independently with good judgment and minimal direction

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite

  • Proficiency in social media platforms and email marketing services

  • Attention to detail, quality and attention to detail

  • Organized and able to effectively manage multiple projects and tasks at the same time.

  • Resourceful and adaptable to manage overlaps, changing priorities and strict deadlines while maintaining a professional attitude

  • Interact with clients, consultants and colleagues with complete professionalism

  • Maintain an office culture of open communication and honesty
