Scottish architectural firm Allan Murray announces growth plans after key development

A Scottish architectural firm involved in a series of high-profile projects in Edinburgh, including St James’s Quarter, New Waverley, The Tun and the BioQuarter masterplan, has entered employee ownership.

Directors Conor Pittman and Kenny McNally will continue to lead Allan Murray Architects, which was founded in 1992 and has a team of 13 people. The deal will allow Allan Murray, who previously held all the shares, to fully retire.

A spokesperson outlined the firm’s major growth plans for 2021.

Mr Pittman said: “We have the incredible legacy of Allan and a team that has absorbed so much knowledge and fame over the past decades – and now we want to come together and emerge from the challenges that the whole industry encountered over the past year. . Employee ownership will help us grow and develop – and meet new tests with greater ingenuity and responsibility. It will also ensure that our team is fully rewarded for their brilliant work.

Mr Pittman pointed to ‘exciting projects’ such as the Abbey Lane development in Edinburgh, with planning approval granted to accommodate 298 students.

Allan Murray Architects noted that with 100% of its shares transferred to an employee share ownership trust, the company “would annually share an agreed share of profits among employees, regardless of position.” The firm added that it joins Scottish firms PagePark, Collective Architecture, Anderson Bell + Christie and Architype “in the growing number of architectural firms choosing the employee shareholding business model”.

Mr McNally, who the company says is ‘overseeing the £1billion St James Quarter Masterplan’, said: ‘Employee ownership is a natural path for us as the company moves into its next chapter.The business is now mature and the responsibility to continue to develop our reputation is shared among all of us.
